Bottled Water: While bottled water is readily available, it’s important to choose reputable brands. However,
utilizing natural water sources with proper purification methods is often more sustainable and environmentally
friendly.
Purified Natural Water: This option is frequently considered superior to bottled water, especially during treks in
Nepal. We recommend bringing water purification tablets or a filtration system. Natural water sources such as
springs, aquifers, and taps are often accessible on treks, allowing you to refill and purify water as needed instead
of relying solely on bottled water. Most all of our partner international schools also prefer this approach.
Using purified natural water is generally considered a better choice than bottled water for several reasons,
especially during treks in Nepal.
- Environmental Impact: Using natural water with purification methods helps reduce plastic waste, which is
a significant issue in remote trekking areas. Bottled water contributes to plastic pollution, especially in
places where waste management facilities may be limited.
- Sustainability: Bottled water often requires significant resources for production, packaging, and
transportation, particularly in remote areas. In contrast, purifying local natural water sources is more
sustainable and leaves a smaller carbon footprint.
- Cost-Effective: Carrying purification tablets or a filtration system can save costs. Bottled water,
particularly in trekking areas, tends to be expensive as it needs to be transported to high-altitude regions.
- Access to Water Sources: Natural water sources, such as spring, aquifer and tap , are often more readily
available on treks. Instead of relying on limited supplies of bottled water, you can refill and purify water as
needed from these sources.
- Mineral Content: Natural water from mountain sources often contains beneficial minerals that can be lost
in the bottled water processing. With purification tablets or a filtration system, you retain these minerals
while ensuring the water is safe to drink.
- Hydration on the Go: Trekking can lead to high water consumption. Accessing purified natural water
means you don’t have to carry large amounts of bottled water, which would add extra weight to your
gear.
Using purified natural water while trekking offers a more environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and practical
solution compared to relying on processed bottled water.
